Sustainability Mural
The Sustainability Council of Colorado Mesa University wanted to create a mural on campus with a call to action, encouraging students and faculty on campus to thinkĀ about their choices and make a betterĀ environment for themselves and others on campus. The design that was chosen was a collaborative piece between my partner and I, where I drew the illustrations and she designed the type. This piece highlighted the sustainable practices already in place in the Grand Valley, as well as the sustainable options on campus.
We began with creating several sketches of 10 concepts each, going through an expensive critique and revisions to land at our strongest ideas.
Originally, I had created the collage as an illustrated idea, but together my partner and I were able to push the idea with typography and a packed composition.
Concepts
The jam packed composition highlights sustainable practices found on campus like the Zero Waste Wagon and the nearby refillery as well as practiced found in the Grand Valley.
The Sustainability Council were most attracted to this design due to its celebration of the local efforts Grand Junction residents take to care for their environment.
Concepts
Brainstorming began with creating moodboards that encompassed several concepts focusing on typographic pieces and simple illustration.
One of the concepts presented called for people on campus to take better care of disposing single use items with a straightforward but positive illustration.
It Matters
The phrasing works to connect the audience with the issue, with color alluding to an environmental theme. The well being of each student matters just as much as the that of the environment around us.
The organic shaping makes the background look sludgy and the lettering look melted, inspired from pollution.
Better Earth
Short phrasing with our typographic concepts was going to be the most effective to be read at a long distance.
To best read from the paths around the building while keeping readability between the distance of the walls, bold coloring and using a two word phrase best.
